Rowan is a one off design that Iain Oughtred drew for James McMullen. She is very similar to a Ness Yawl, but she has a fuller, more stable hull shape that is ideal for camp crusing (one of James' favorite past times). I met James for the first time at the festival (after a long internet correspondence). He has done a beautiful job building his boat and I was delighted to spend a couple of hours aboard seening the show from the water. Here are a few shots:
Tied to the beach with Adventuress for a backdrop. The lug yawl rig stores easily in the boat and can be set up in about five minutes.
James and his vessel.
James at the helm and my cousin Glenn, who was also thrilled to get out on the water.
And there I am at the helm. The push pull tiller will take some getting used to, but I managed. The side seats and thwart are pommelle figured mahogany!
James and a friend sailing Rowan during the sail-by at the end of the day. She was the only boat like her on the water except:
Dragonfly. She is a Ness Yawl built some years ago by James, and now owned and sailed by his brother. We played tag with her for quite awhile.
